2 Days Munnar Tour from Kochi

Your driver arrives at your Kochi hotel, airport, or railway station at 7:00 AM sharp. The drive to Munnar covers approximately 130 kilometres and takes 4 to 4.5 hours with stops. Leave early and you beat the traffic out of Kochi, and arrive in Munnar while the mountain light is still good.

The first stretch of the drive takes you through the flat coastal districts of Ernakulam, then into the rubber plantation belt of the midlands. The road narrows as you enter the Idukki district and the gradient starts to climb. This is where the Western Ghats begin in earnest. The road winds upward through dense cardamom forests, past small tribal settlements and roadside chai shops.

Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls

About 45 kilometres before Munnar, you reach the twin waterfalls of Cheeyappara and Valara. Cheeyappara is a seven-step cascading waterfall that drops about 300 metres down a granite rockface. Valara is a single, wide fall a few kilometres further up the road. Both are visible from roadside viewpoints and there are steps leading down to closer viewing areas. Between September and January the falls are at full volume after the monsoon rains and the sight is genuinely spectacular.

Stop for 20 to 30 minutes at each waterfall. There are small stalls nearby selling tender coconut and local snacks.

Spice Plantation Stop

Just past the waterfalls, your driver takes you through a short walk in a working spice garden. These small farm plots grow black pepper, cardamom, ginger, cloves, vanilla, and cinnamon on the hillside. The farm guide explains how each plant grows and how the spices are harvested and dried. You taste freshly brewed cardamom tea at the end. The whole stop takes about 30 to 45 minutes and it completely changes how you think about the spices you use every day.

Arrival in Munnar

You arrive in Munnar around midday. Check in to your hotel and have lunch. The town of Munnar itself is small and compact, set at the confluence of three mountain rivers. The market area has plenty of restaurants, tea shops, and spice stores.

Kannan Devan Tea Museum

In the afternoon, visit the Kannan Devan Tea Museum operated by the Tata Tea company. The museum tells the complete story of tea cultivation in the Munnar hills from the British colonial period through to today. Original machinery from the early 1900s is on display, including withering troughs, rolling machines, and drying chambers. The exhibitions explain the full process from tea leaf to finished product. Several varieties of fresh Munnar tea, including orthodox, CTC, and green tea, are available for tasting at the museum store.

Mattupetty Dam and Lake

After the museum, drive to Mattupetty Dam, about 13 kilometres from Munnar town at an altitude of 1,700 metres. The dam was built in 1940 and the reservoir behind it forms a wide, still lake surrounded by forest-covered hills. Boating is available from a jetty near the dam and the ride gives you wide views across the water toward the treeline. The Swiss model dairy farm at Mattupetty, operated by the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project, is worth a short stop. You often spot elephants, gaur, and sambar deer at the forest edge near the lake, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon.

Echo Point

A few kilometres past Mattupetty, the road reaches Echo Point, a wide valley where the hillside geometry creates a natural echo. You clap, call out, or whistle and hear your voice return from the hills across the valley. The views from Echo Point across the lake and tea-covered ridgelines are excellent and this is one of the most photographed spots in Munnar.
